Description

This course provides a comprehensive guide for aspiring cloud practitioners interested in learning the full lifecycle of deploying and configuring virtual instances on popular cloud platforms such as AWS and Linode. The course starts right away with the basics where we explore different models of cloud computing services. This includes Infrastructure as a Service, Platform as a Service and Software as a Service. From there, students gain hands-on experience in creating and managing remote virtual instances along with Ubuntu, Apache, MariaDB, and PHP. Students will learn the differences between popular web servers such as Apache and NGINX and get a detailed overview of the different database management systems. This includes SQL and NoSQL databases, as well as database transaction standards such as the ACID and CAP theorems. In addition to deep theoretical dives, this course shows how to install, configure, and secure the Ubuntu LAMP stack for hosting database-driven dynamic web applications. We offer an in-depth server security segment where students configure software and network firewalls for their instances with strict firewall rules, UFW, and a dedicated SSH port. During this phase, students will also learn how to scale their servers both vertically and horizontally using Application Load Balancers.

The second half of this course provides a comprehensive guide to Amazon Web Services. We’ll start with a demonstration of how to set up, secure, and navigate an AWS account. This includes setting up billing notifications and multi-factor authentication. From there we dived into AWS Identity and Access Management to improve account security and user account management for various AWS services. Here we examine IAM user management and permissions, IAM groups, IAM policies, and access key rotation. After the IAM part, let’s move on to Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) services. In this module, students work on deploying AWS virtual instances using Amazon Machine Images, Elastic IPs, and launch templates. We’ll also explore IAM roles for EC2, EC2 security groups, SSH key pair authentication, and remote management using Terminal and EC2 Instance Connect.
