Digital forensics is a branch of forensic science that deals with the recovery, study, research and analysis of material found on digital devices, often in relation to mobile devices and computer crimes. The term digital forensics was originally used as a synonym for computer forensics, but has expanded to include the study of any device capable of storing digital data. Rooted in the personal computing revolution of the late 1970s and early 1980s, the discipline developed at random in the 1990s, and national policies emerged only in the early 21st century.
Digital forensics has a wide variety of applications. Most commonly, hypotheses are supported or disproved in criminal or civil courts. Criminal cases deal with alleged violations of the law, which are defined by law and enforced by the police and tried by the state, such as: B. Theft and Personal Injury. Civil cases, on the other hand, deal with the protection of individual rights and property (often in the context of family disputes) but can also relate to contractual disputes between commercial companies, where a form of digital forensics is called electronic discovery (Discovery).
In the 1980s, there were few specialized digital forensic tools, and as a result, investigators often performed media analysis in person, checking computers for operating systems and using existing system administrator tools to extract evidence. This practice risks changing the data on the hard drive by mistake or vice versa, leading to alleged tampering of evidence. A number of tools were developed in the early 1990s to address this problem.
Digital forensics is often used in criminal law as well as in private investigations. It has traditionally been associated with criminal law, where evidence is gathered to support or refute hypotheses in court. Like other fields of forensics, it is often part of a wider investigation involving a number of disciplines. In some cases, the evidence collected is used as a form of gathering information to be used for purposes other than court proceedings (eg to find, identify, or stop other crimes). As a result, information collection is sometimes subject to less stringent forensic standards.
