About SAR Data Processing and its Applications

ISRO offers Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) for national and international participants. MOOC is based on the principle of self-paced user-centric learning and aims to link learners from across the globe with educators and provides user and discussion forums to support interactions among students in a collaborative learning platform.

The advancement of earth observation has opened new avenues of research in the field of earth sciences. With the technological advancements in geo-information sciences, remote sensing has become an effective method for the detection and investigation of various features.

The visible and infra-red regions are known as optical regions, and the microwave region (1mm – 1m) is considered a non-optical region. Systems operating in the optical region are limited by the availability of sunlight and interference with atmospheric conditions such as haze and cloud cover, especially in tropical regions.

Whereas Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is an active system that can image both day and night, in almost all weather conditions. Another benefit is that SAR sensors are sensitive to the “roughness” and “wetness” of the target surface, hence offering a unique insight into observing and monitoring the earth’s surface features. The advantage of subsurface penetration and other unique capabilities have been extensively used in various applications ranging from agriculture, landslides, snow-related studies, floods, forestry, geological studies, land subsidence, etc.
