About the SEBI

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is the regulatory body for the securities and commodity markets in India under the administrative domain of the Ministry of Finance within the Government of India. It was established on 12 April 1988 as an executive body and was given statutory powers on 30 January 1992 through the SEBI Act, 1992

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) was first established in 1988 as a non-statutory body for regulating the securities market. Before it came into existence, the Controller of Capital Issues was the market’s regulatory authority and derived power from the Capital Issues (Control) Act, of 1947 SEBI became an autonomous body on 30 January 1992 and was accorded statutory powers with the passing of the SEBI Act, 1992 by the Parliament of India. It has its headquarters at the business district of Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai and has Northern, Eastern, Southern and Western Regional Offices in New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Ahmedabad, respectively. Up until June 2023, it also had 17 local offices spread all over India to promote investor education; however, 16 of them were closed as part of a restructuring exercise.

About the Free Investor Certification Program News

A free investor certification program has been introduced by the market regulator in collaboration with the National Institute of Securities Market (NISM).

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) stated in a June 11 circular that the purpose of this voluntary certification is to assist investors in assessing their level of market and investment understanding. It also stated that its goal is to help people on their path to learning everything there is to know about investing in the Indian stock markets.

Ananth Narayan G, a whole-time member of SEBI, stated during the introduction that improving digital financial education in the securities market is a major goal of the new certification exam.

“This online test will help investors better understand the investment process and the risks associated with the securities market, which will promote an efficient approach to investing that is in line with the investor’s risk appetite,” he stated.

Examination Objectives of the Free Investor Certification Program

The following are the goals of the examination:

1. Gain a basic grasp of financial principles, such as budgeting, saving, investing, and inflation.

2. Recognize the different government initiatives

3. Understand the fundamentals of the primary and secondary securities markets’ structures.

4. Recognize the function of depositories, regulatory agencies, and stock exchanges.

5. Acquire knowledge of the hazards connected to investing, including liquidity, market, and credit risk.

6. Recognize the basics of risk management, such as diversification and hedging.

7. Acknowledge the significance of ethical conduct, openness, and due diligence in investing procedures.

8. Educate investors on the rights and obligations, disclosure standards, and dispute resolution procedures.
