What you’ll learn

  1. Create custom bone-based animated characters in Unity 3d
  2. Working with spritesheets in Unity. We’ll look at importing, slicing, and setting up anchor points.
  3. Assemble a bone-based 2D character, arrange all body parts in a hierarchy, and get ready to be animated.
  4. Create idle, run and jump animations for your character. We’re going to create a jump animation using an interesting technique that involves blending trees.
  5. Configure transitions between animations in the Animator component.
  6. Write a simple control script that allows our character to move and jump in the level.
  7. Use ScriptableObject assets to store your character’s clothing.
  8. Apply clothing from your special assets to your character and change his appearance.
  9. Show off additional clothing items and decorative items such as bracelets and necklaces as part of your character’s outfit.
  10. Create articulated characters that can “transform” into different shaped characters using the same animation.

Description

Creating 2D platformer games is a great way to learn about Unity game development. In this course you will learn how to create so-called “bone-based” 2D characters – characters made up of individual body parts. The material in this course is divided into 3 parts. Part 1 provides a brief introduction to the course.

In Part 2, we’ll focus on creating a simple bone-based character from scratch. We’ll cover the entire character creation process, from creating an empty Unity project and importing a sprite sheet with art to properly assembling a bone-based character and animating it with Unity’s built-in Mechanim animation system. At the end of this section, we’ll have a basic bone-based character that can run and jump at a makeshift level.

In part 3 we’ll talk about some modern techniques for working with 2D animated characters. For bone-based characters the correct order in the scene is very important, so in our first few talks we’ll talk about solving sequence problems. Next, we’ll look at how to assign different looks and outfits to your character. This approach is very convenient because you can create all the characters in your game from a single buildable character, but all of them can wear different outfits and look different. It’s also much easier to dress up your character or change your game skin when needed. We’ll also talk about how to flaunt some unique items like bracelets, necklaces, belts and other decorations on your character. The same approach can be used to display other clothing items. We will end this section by creating a more complex character that will have “joints”. Splices allow us to use the same animation model for characters of different shapes (wider shoulders, shorter legs, longer arms, etc.)
