The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is thrilled to announce the ISRO Robotics Challenge 2024 (IRoC-U 2024), an extraordinary event that invites students from across India to showcase their ingenuity and innovation in the field of space robotics. About the ISRO

The Indian Space Research Organisation is the national space agency of India. It operates as the primary research and development arm of the Department of Space (DoS), which is directly overseen by the Prime Minister of India, while the Chairman of ISRO also acts as the executive of DoS. ISRO is primarily responsible for performing tasks related to space-based operations, space exploration, international space cooperation, and the development of related technologies. ISRO is one of the six government space agencies in the world that possesses full launch capabilities, can deploy cryogenic engines, can launch extraterrestrial missions, and operate a large fleet of artificial satellites. ISRO is one of the four government space agencies to have soft landing (uncrewed) capabilities.

ISRO was previously known as the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR), set up under Jawaharlal Nehru on the suggestions of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai in 1962 recognizing the need for space research. INCOSPAR grew and became ISRO in 1969, within the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). In 1972, the government of India set up a Space Commission and the DoS, bringing ISRO under it. The establishment of ISRO thus institutionalized space research activities in India. It has since been managed by DoS, which also governs various other institutions in India in the domain of astronomy and space technology.

About the ISRO Robotics Challenge

To provide a greater opportunity for the students of the country to provide innovative solutions in the area of space robotics, it is planned to organize “ISRO Robotics Challenge-URSC 2024 (IRoC-U 2024)” with a tagline of “Let’s build a space robot”. The solutions provided by the students in IRoC-U 2024 have a greater chance of getting incorporated into ISRO’s future interplanetary robotics missions.

IRoC-U 2024 consists of an engineering project where the Institutional teams build robots to compete in an extra-terrestrial-inspired arena, performing tasks based on the real-life challenges faced by space robotics. IRoC-U is being planned as a platform for the co-development of technologies in the area of space robotics through organizing challenges.

Eligibility Criteria

The competition is open to students of Indian origin studying in educational institutions located in India.

Only one team shall participate in the event from an Institute.

The team consists of students pursuing graduation/post-graduation/research.

The team must consist of 10 students from the same Institute.

The maximum age of any student member shall be 30 years as of 23rd August 2023.

The team must be mentored by a faculty from the same Institute.

The team may have an additional mentor from the Industry.

Awards and Recognitions

The first three teams will be awarded based on the evaluation by the jury and the fair play attitude of the teams. Additionally, two consolation prizes are also planned.

The awards in the form of cash and institute trophy are planned as follows:

  • 1st Place: Rs. 5.0 Lakhs along with the Institute trophy.
  • 2nd Place: Rs. 3.0 Lakhs along with the Institute trophy.
  • 3rd Place: Rs. 2.0 Lakhs along with the Institute trophy.
  • Two consolation prizes of Rs. 1.0 Lakh each along with the Institute trophy.

The teams qualifying for the Field Round and participating on challenge day will be awarded an appreciation certificate to each of the team members and mentors. The teams qualifying for the Quals and who have submitted the design report will be awarded participation certificates to each of the team members and mentors.

No certificates will be given to the teams who fail to submit the design report by the specified timeline. The first three prize-winning rovers (viz., places 1st, 2nd, and 3rd) will get a commemorative sticker placed on it by the organizers for each place. Each team qualifying for the Field Round and participating on the challenge day will be provided with financial assistance of Rs. 2.0 Lakhs.

Venue

The final onsite competition to perform the required tasks is planned to be conducted at U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC), Bengaluru Campus in the Month of August 2024.

Participating Teams

Registration

All teams must complete the registration process on the website. The registration procedure
includes:

Team login account creation.

Fill out the team details and download the auto-generated registration form.

Upload duly signed auto-generated form.

Upload proposal file in .pdf format (Max. pages:30 and Max. file size: 10 MB).

NOTE: Registration shall be deemed to be completed only after uploading as per steps 3 and 4.

Team Members

Team Lead Responsibilities

Each team should identify one member as a team lead.
 Any communication from the organizers will be sent to only the team lead and any
query/clarification should also be raised only using the team lead’s email.
 No response will be provided to the email addresses other than that of the team lead.
These emails will be considered as spam.

Selection Process

The selection is a two-step process wherein, in the Prelims a maximum of 50 teams will be
selected from initial registered teams based on the evaluation of proposals.

From the Quals, a maximum of 10 teams will be selected for the Field Round based on the
evaluation of the design and demonstration of the prototype. The decision of the organizers in this
regard will be final and binding.

Field Round Requirement: The final onsite competition to perform the required
tasks is planned to be conducted at URSC Bengaluru (Details shall be provided)

Important Dates

Submission of registration form along with proposal: November 20, 2023 to December 15, 2023

Announcement of Selection of teams for Quals (Maximum 50 teams will be selected): January 15, 2024

Submission of Design Report (DR) by selected teams: February 15, 2024

Feedback on DR by organisers: March 1, 2024

Demo of the prototype by selected teams: May 15, 2024, to May 19, 2024

Selection of teams for Field Round (Maximum 10 teams will be selected): May 25, 2024

Release of task particulars for Field Round: June 1, 2024

Operation Readiness Review and Feedback: July 1, 2024, to July 6, 2024

Team Preparation Day: August 4, 2024

ISRO Robotics Challenge Day: August 5, 2024 and August 6, 2024

Awards Ceremony on National Space Day: August 23, 2024
