The SURGE (Students-Undergraduate Research Graduate Excellence) program at IIT Kanpur is an initiative that allows undergraduate students from IITK and other participating institutions to undertake short-duration, focused research projects under the mentorship of IITK faculty members. The program provides an opportunity for students to gain research experience in their respective fields. IIT Kanpur offers Surge to students from different categories. The eligibility criteria for SAARC countries students, Non-IITK Indian students, and IITK students are as follows:
1. SAARC Countries Students
Eligibility Criteria
- B.Tech/BE/B-Arch/BS (3rd year completed)
- Five-year degree program (3rd or 4th year completed)
- B.Sc/B.A. (2nd year completed)
- M.Sc. 2-Year (1st year completed)
- CPI >= 6
Required documents:
- Passport size photograph
- Research proposal
- Current transcript
- Two recommendation letters
2.Non-IITK Indian Students
Eligibility Criteria
- B.Tech/BE/B-Arch/BS (3rd year completed)
- Five-year degree program (3rd or 4th year completed)

- M.Sc. 2-Year (1st year completed)
- CPI >= 6

Benefits & Perks of IIT Kanpur Surge Internship 2024
The IIT Kanpur Surge Internship 2024 offers various benefits and funding options for selected students:
- Institute Funded Category:
- Stipend of Rs 12,500/- during the program duration.
- Candidates with CPI>=8.5 are eligible for consideration for Institute Funding.
- IITK Project Funded Category:
- Funding directly from the faculty members (mentors) of IIT Kanpur.
- Self-Funded Category:
- Opportunity to work on projects of faculty members of IIT Kanpur without funding.
- Funding for SAARC Participants:
- Eligible for a scholarship of Rs. 12,500/-.
- Administrative charges and travel expenses (up to Rs. 10,000/- or as per actual) are reimbursed.
- Industry-IITK Tie-up:
- Opportunity to work on real-world projects proposed by the industry with a stipend paid by the industry. This category was open only to IIT Kanpur students in SURGE-2023
- Certificate:
- Candidates get a certificate of participation on completion of an internship from IIT Kanpur
How to apply for IIT Kanpur Surge Internship 2024?

To apply for IIT Kanpur Surge Internship 2024 follow the below steps:-
PHASE-I:
Step-1: Register for SURGE 2024
(i) Register through the online portal LINK
(ii) There are three categories: IITK: Only IITK Students can apply. NON-IITK: Only Indian students from various Indian Institutions can apply. SAARC: Only students of SAARC countries (from Nepal, and Bhutan) can apply.
(iii) Complete the registration form in all respects. An email indicating the successful completion of registration of your online application will be sent to your registered email address containing login credentials.
Step 2: Payment of Registration Fee (Non-refundable) of Rs 750/- (only for NON-IITK students)
(i) Before going through the payment process please go through the payment procedure LINK.
(ii) Please click on the State Bank Collect link to pay the Registration Fee.
(iii) After completion of payment please note down the Transaction ID and save the payment receipt in .pdf format for future reference.
PHASE-II: Complete the online Registration Form
(i) Go through this link: LINK and login with the credentials received in your registered email and complete the online registration form in all respects. (ii) In Section 4 on your registration portal you need to enter the Transaction ID and upload the payment receipt in .pdf format (for Non-IITK students only).
(iii) Step by step complete all 4 Sections on your registration portal including uploading of relevant documents. After the final submission, you will receive an email on your registered email intimating the successful completion of the online registration form along with the generated Application Number. Please quote the Application Number in all your future correspondence.
(iv) Registration will be considered complete only after receiving the Registration Fee at our end.
Incomplete/Incorrect applications will not be entertained and will be summarily rejected. Any attempt to influence the process will outrightly lead to disqualification of candidature. If the mentor/recommender wants to maintain the confidentiality of the mentor/recommendation certificate then they can directly mail us the .pdf file of the concerned certificate mentioning the Application number of the participant to [email protected]. In such cases, participant is requested to upload the blank PDF mentioning their recommender’s details.
