About the News

In partnership with the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, the Central Government will teach indigenous students in semiconductor technology (IISC). The Tribal Affairs Ministry intends to enhance cell and internet access in remote tribal settlements through a pilot programme utilising satellite-based technologies, in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Given the government’s recent introduction of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), officials predict that the semiconductor industry will see significant job growth in the years to come.

Within the Digital India Corporation, the ISM is a dedicated and independent business division that seeks to establish a thriving semiconductor and display ecosystem to facilitate India’s rise to prominence as a global centre for electronics design and manufacture.

Semiconductor technology training programmes

According to an official, 2100 semi-conductor technology training programmes are NSQF-certified at levels 6.0 and 6.5, with the possibility of high-paying sector placements. According to IISc Director G Rangarajan, the institute offers tribal students the greatest training available and the nation aspires to become self-sufficient and independent in the semiconductor industry.

Arjun Munda, the minister of tribal affairs, introduced the initiatives today and stated that the ministry hopes to link them to the PM-JANMAN programme. With a budget of Rs 24,000 crores, PM-JANMAN focuses on eleven crucial interventions across nine ministries with the goal of providing basic utilities to PVTG homes and habitations in order to improve the socioeconomic conditions of these groups.

The minister stated that it is critical that tribal people are not left behind as we go towards a Viksit Bharat. Additionally, Munda requested that authorities prioritise mobile connectivity in isolated tribal areas. According to the officials, many tribal settlements suffer from poor connection and challenging topography. To address these issues, the ministry and ISRO intend to employ satellite-based technology in these villages on a trial basis.

To address connectivity problems (e-governance, community internet, social development) in 80 villages across Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Odisha, V-SAT stations will be set up. In the following phase, the project will be expanded to include more states, an official stated.

ISRO chairman S Somanath Said

In a video message, ISRO chairman S Somanath stated that the Ministry will be able to manage tasks relating to healthcare and education with the aid of VSAT connectivity. He suggested that going forward, the government may use satellite-based technologies to locate tribal territory and use it in agriculture. To create the Bhagwan Birsa Munda Chair on Tribal Health and Haematology at the esteemed medical facility, the ministry also inked partnerships with AIIMS Delhi.

It will serve as a multi-disciplinary platform for conducting advanced research on tribal health issues with particular emphasis on sickle-cell anaemia. AIIMS will also organise training programs for doctors and paramedical staff working in tribal areas. The ministry is also collaborating with IIT Delhi and IIM Calcutta to develop a country-wide entrepreneurship ecosystem for tribal youth.

Through tribal businesses and startups, this alliance seeks to improve knowledge of entrepreneurship within tribal communities and have a lasting social effect. According to the officials, this partnership will give tribal artists and producers full support, including ideation, funding, incubation, branding, marketing, and access to national and international markets, opening up new markets for their goods.
