About the ISRO

The Indian Space Research Organization is the national space agency of India. It operates as the primary research and development arm of the Department of Space (DoS), which is directly overseen by the Prime Minister of India while the Chairman of ISRO also acts as the executive of DoS. ISRO is primarily responsible for performing tasks related to space-based operations, space exploration, international space cooperation, and the development of related technologies. ISRO is one of the six government space agencies in the world that possesses full launch capabilities, can deploy cryogenic engines, can launch extraterrestrial missions, and operate a large fleet of artificial satellites. ISRO is one of the four government space agencies to have soft landing (uncrewed) capabilities.

Eligibility Criteria

The program is designed for class 9th students to provide them with fundamental knowledge of space science, its applications, and emerging trends in space technology. 

The program encourages young minds to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) based careers and research. 

Selection Criteria

The students studying in class 9 on 1 Jan 2024 are eligible to apply for the YUVIKA ISRO 2024 program.

ISRO has declared the following parameters as the basis of the selection of the registered students for the two-week Young Scientist Program 2024:

The applicant marks obtained in Class 8 should be 50% at least.

The applicant’s students’ performance weightage in the online quiz should be 10%.

The applicant’s participation weightage in the science fair or quizzes should be 2/ 5/20% (school/ district/ State and above) in the last three years.

 In the last three years, the weightage for 1 to 3 ranks in Olympiads or competitions equivalent to Olympiads in School/ district,/ state or above level should be 2/4/5%.

15% study in village/ rural schools located in panchayat areas.

Winners of sports competitions from 1 to 3 rank in School/ district/ State and above level in three years: 2/4/5%

The weightage of guides and Scout/ NSS members/ NCC in the last three years should be 5%.

Duration

It’s a two-week program (13 May-24 May 2024), where students’ schedules include talking with ISRO scientists, lab visits, sharing experiences with scientists, and discussing space and technology.

Centers for the ISRO Yuvika Program

The YUVIKA program is planned at the following seven centers of ISRO in India:

Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Dehradun

U.R. Rao Satellite Center (URSC), Bengaluru.

Satish Dhavan Space Center (SDSC), Sriharikota.

Space Applications Center (SAC), Ahmedabad.

National Remote Sensing Center (NRSC), Hyderabad.

Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram.

North-Eastern Space Application Center (NE-SAC), Shillong.

Under the program, the state government will cover the expenses of traveling to the center and from the ISRO centers of selected students. The students will have to show their original ticket for the bus or second AC fare reimbursement.

The YUVIKA ISRO program is a great educational initiative by ISRO to nurture the nation’s young minds and encourage the spirit of innovation and science. So, students go and apply to experience the space technology and applications of the ISRO.
